James Corden shares emotional conversation with his son that led him to leave ‘The Late Late Show’

James Corden is finally pulling back the curtain on his curious, curious decision to leave late night behind.

While appearing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” this week, the “Late Late Show” host, 44, revealed his choice to leave the CBS gig isn’t something he wants to do, but needs to for his family.

“It’s not easy in any way to walk away from something that is so— I mean I’ll never work in a better environment than the one I work in now,” said Corden. “Nothing about leaving the show was to do with not enjoying it. I love it.”

The “Mammals” star — who found himself in hot water late last year after a dust up with Balthazar owner Keith McNally — said “it became a very easy decision” to leave when he was making the Prime Video show.

He recalled a time when, two years ago, his then-10-year-old son Max was disappointed to learn his dad would be working on a Sunday.

“His face just kinda dropped, and I got in the car and I called my wife, Jules, and I said, ‘I’ve realized, best case scenario, best case scenario, we have six more summers where Max is like, even remotely wants to be around us. And I cannot waste another one,’” said Corden. “So really, the choice was to go, well if I want to do this other work, that cannot be at the expense of our children, our family.”

While Corden said he “will be a mess on that last show,” he said he’ll remember why he’s stepping away.

“It feels absolutely right in every single way,” said Corden, who announced last April he’d exit the show before this summer to move back to the U.K.
