James Corden savaged by fans for 'cringe' musical celebrating end of US lockdown

James Corden put on a Hairspray-inspired skit on The Late Late Show to celebrate the easing of coronavirus lockdown measures in the US but was met with backlash from fans.

The TV presenter was joined by singer Ariana Grande, and Broadway star Marissa Jaret to perform "No Lockdowns Anymore" to the hit Hairspray number "Good Morning Baltimore".

The song featured lyrics such as: "Got the vaccine and it’s been two weeks. There’s life in the streets! Hot people at brunch, and I’ve got a hunch, mimosas are gonna be bottomless."

Snippets from the video find the stars singing and dancing on the streets in New York City, celebrating all the things that Covid-19 put a stop to.

In one clip, show host James turns off Zoom and shaves his thick beard, whilst Ariana gets a trim in a salon and goes to the gym.

But not all of his fans were thrilled with the joyous performance as many people branded the skit "cringe" and "tone deaf."

One person said: "We need a new word for things like this, cringe just isn't strong enough," while another wrote: "I've just seen that James Corden video and now I don't think I can ever watch anything ever again."

"If there’s one thing the pandemic has proved is that pandemic related art is awful," said someone else.

Others, however, defended the star, writing: "I promise you it’s not that serious, it’s something fun for the summertime."

Another person added: "So many people pressed over the parody Ariana did for the James Corden show, please I beg of u get a hobby it's just a lighthearted fun skit."
