James Cleverly says Tories must agree on definition of Islamophobia before probe

Tory Chairman James Cleverly has vowed to launch an independent inquiry into Islamophobia in the Conservative Party.

But he said the probe wouldn't be launched until the party had agreed on a definition of Islamophobia - which they have failed so far to do.

The new party chief was asked by Sky News whether a full, independent probe would be ordered.

He said: “There will be, yes. There will be.”

But he added the party would have to first agree on a definition of Islamophobia.

Mr Cleverly said: “One of the things we need to do is get a definition of that. And so specifically on that point we will be guided by a definition of Islamophobia.”

The Government was criticised in May for rejecting a definition of Islamophobia which had been adopted by Labour , the Lib Dems and the Conservative Party in Scotland.

The definition proposed by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on British Muslims reads: "Islamophobia is rooted in racism and is a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness."

Its report on the definition said it had been reached after "widespread consultation with academics, lawyers, local and nationally elected officials, Muslim organisations, activists, campaigners and local Muslim communities”.

But ministers were reportedly wary of backing the definition on freedom of speech grounds.

During the leadership campaign, Boris Johnson answered a question Islamophobia by defending the party’s “culture that allows people to speak frankly,” adding “there is a balance to be struck.”

Mr Johnson last year refused to apologise after comparing Muslim women wearing face veils to “letterboxes” and “bank robbers”.
