James Bond and Game of Thrones stuntman dies with tributes to 'remarkable soul'

Tributes have been paid to Phil Lonergan, a renowned stuntman who starred in James Bond films and the Game of Thrones series.

The Irishman, from Kilcolgan in Co Galway has been described as a "remarkable soul" after he passed away suddenly at his home.

Phil had more than 20 years of experience as a stuntman and his work can be seen in Bond films Tomorrow Never Dies, Goldeneye as well as popular TV series Game of Thrones and Vikings.

He most recently appeared on the big screen in Black Widow and The Last Duel.

It has been reported that the father-of-two passed away on October 28 with friends and former colleagues describing Phil as "a true legend of the stunt world".

Stunt Guild Ireland said in a statement: "RIP to our friend and colleague Phil Lonergan. We're finding it tough to believe as he was so full of life and such a character in your day.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."

Entertainment website Behind The Stunts also wrote: "Phil Lonergan who sadly left us yesterday. Our thoughts are with all those who knew him and worked with him over the years."

Friends of Phil have also remembered his talents as an actor and singer, as well as being a stuntman.

One person wrote on social media: "I’m so sad to hear this - he was a remarkable soul that wrote and played fantastic songs too - and that beautiful homestead he built out on the coast with his horses and his love."

Another added: "Very sad news indeed. Such a lovely fella was Phil and great fun to be around. RIP old friend and miss you already!"

A third said: "Hard not to like, Phil.. he was a decent fun guy.. RIP."

Meanwhile a fourth person added: "Sad to hear of the passing of Phil Lonergan. He was a gentle spoken man who loved to sing. Always looking for a jam session. RIP big man."

His funeral took place in Galway on Sunday with a notice on RIP.ie stating: "Phillip Lonergan, Stradbally West, Tyrone, Kilcolgan, Co. Galway. October 28th, 2021. Predeceased by his parents and his sister Nellie.

"Sadly missed by his loving partner Gillian, his daughter Katie, his son Riley, son-in-law Tom, daughter-in-law Kim, grandson Reuben, granddaughter Nel, sisters Margaret and Mary, brothers Davey, Tom and Bill and partners, nieces, nephews, relatives and his many friends."
