James Blunt - Once Upon A Mind review: Mature lyrics with emotional heft

These days, James Blunt does a good line in Twitter quips — though on his new 11-track record, he shows he can string a thought out for longer than 280 characters. Pretty eloquently, too.

He calls Once Upon A Mind his most personal album yet; certainly, he covers a lot of hefty emotional milestones, from love, to fear, through the death of a parent.

Granted, if you’re allergic to slushy key changes and falsetto warbling, steer clear — but lyrically it’s mature and the songs have a pulse (and the occasional surprise tambourine).

Cold — an affecting love song — is definitely romcom territory and Champions has the sort of great British bombast that Blunt fans will love.
