James Belshaw wants third promotion on his CV after joining Bristol Rovers from Harrogate Town

Joey Barton's lofty expectations lured James Belshaw to Bristol Rovers, the goalkeeper said after completing his move to the Mem on Friday.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed the taste of two promotions in a hugely successful spell with Harrogate Town, and he wants to add a third to his CV after penning a two-year contract with the Gas.

Belshaw had been on trial with Rovers for close to three weeks before earning his contract, which was awarded on the back of an impressive performance in Saturday's friendly against Plymouth Argyle.

Over his early weeks at The Quarters, Belshaw has been left in no doubt of the manager's expectations; the club from top to bottom is targeting an immediate return to League One.

The goalkeeper, who will provide back-up to number-one gloveman Anssi Jaakkola, wants to contribute towards that aim.

"I’ve been here training for the past couple of weeks so they could have an extended look at me and all the chats I’ve had with the gaffer have been very positive," Belshaw told the club's website.

"He outlined his expectations and what he wanted from me at the start, and he’s been absolutely fantastic. Very supportive, very positive.

"He outlined his plans for the club and where he sees the club going, and he’s seen me play in a couple of games. He wanted to see what I could do under pressure.

"After the game last Saturday, he said he wanted to get something sorted and from then it’s been plain sailing.

"I’m delighted to get it over the line. As soon as I heard about the interest, it was something I definitely wanted to pursue.

"It’s a massive football club with high aspirations, great setup, fantastic staff and players, so it was a no-brainer for me to come down here and try to get something sorted."

Belshaw won promotions from the National League North and National League with the Sulphurites before playing 39 League Two games last season.

"Whatever level it’s at, that winning experience is invaluable," he said.

"I’ve had two promotions with Harrogate, playing in two big finals and taken the club to the Football League, winning at Wembley last year.

"I’m used to playing under pressure and in big games and that’s footballers want, they want to win things, get promoted.

"As soon as I heard of the interest here, it’s a club that has expectations of winning this league and getting out of it and that’s something I want to be a part of.

"My job is to come in and work hard and try to contribute to the team in whatever way I can."

Belshaw's first appearance in a Rovers shirt came in a vacant stadium, with the Plymouth friendly played behind closed doors at the Mem.

But Gasheads will be back on the terraces on Saturday, and Belshaw is looking forward to welcoming them back.

"What’s going to be great this season is we’re going to have fans back," he added.

"I played here last weekend in an empty stadium. I think this place will be rocking, especially if we’re at the top of the league, and that would be fantastic."
