James Anderson injured in first session of 2019 Ashes with England's record bowler set for scan

James Anderson has been injured on the first morning of the 2019 Ashes series.

England's record wicket-taker felt tightness in his right calf at Edgbaston and will undergo a scan in the afternoon to discover the extent of the injury.

Anderson was selected along with Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad as England's quick-bowling trio, with all-rounder Ben Stokes also chipping in.

Jofra Archer was the man to miss out - but the World Cup winner could see an opportunity present itself for the second Test at Lord's should Anderson's injury be sufficiently bad to rule him out.

Anderson did not feature in the Test against Ireland having suffered pain playing for Lancashire at the start of last month.

The 37-year-old and England medics were confident he would be fit enough for this match, but he has pulled up.

It made an already bad day worse for Anderson after his Audi was smashed into in the hotel car park in Birmingham.

His opening bowling partner Stuart Broad starred in the first hour, removing both Aussie openers.

He trapped David Warner LBW and had Cameron Bancroft caught at first slip by Joe Root.

Chris Woakes took the other wicket of the morning session as Usman Khawaja edged him behind to Jonny Bairstow.

Steve Smith and Travis Head led the Australian recovery and the tourists reached 83-3 at lunch.
