Jimmy Anderson celebrates the wicket of India captain Virat Kohli at Headingley
(Picture: AFP via Getty Images)The timeless James Anderson gave England the dream start to the Third Test against India with three wickets — capped by the prized scalp of Virat Kohli.
Kohli won the the toss for the first time since February and opted to bat first at Headingley. The decision did not pay early dividends, however.
After a pair of inswingers, Anderson tempted KL Rahul, man of the match in India's win at Lord's, into a big drive at the fifth ball of the Test, and he was caught behind by Jos Buttler for a duck.
In his next over, Anderson had Pujara caught behind to leave India four for two.
Kohli, who has not scored a Test century since 2019, joined Rohit Sharma at the crease. They appeared to be settling, when Kohli had a big drive at Anderson.
In a fractious series, England celebrated wildly as Anderson's masterclass in swing bowling in helpful conditions reduced the tourists to 21 for three.
While India were unchanged, England made two changes to their side, with Dawid Malan returning at No3 for his first Test in three years and Dom Sibley and Haseeb Hameed promoted to open.
Craig Overton came into the side for Mark Wood, who has a shoulder injury. Overton has played four Tests since his debut in 2017, the last coming two years ago at Old Trafford in the Ashes.
Joe Root said they had opted for Overton because of his high release point on a pitch that is spongy and expected to be sluggish.
Mahmood, who is inexperienced at first-class level, would have represented a more direct replacement for Wood, as he is quicker and capable of reverse swinging the ball.
