Jamal Lowe's Bournemouth move and Tariqe Fosu situation explained as Swansea City boss Russell Martin offers Michael Obafemi encouragement

Russell Martin believes Michael Obafemi is better suited to fit in to his Swansea City side than Jamal Lowe, who was allowed to join Bournemouth.

The Swans endured a manic transfer deadline day and saw Lowe move to the Cherries for a fee in the region of £1.5m, a sum which could rise to around £2m.

Having also let Kyle Joseph move to Cheltenham Town on loan, the Swans were keen to bring in a number nine and recruited Obafemi on a permanent deal from Southampton.

Martin has now revealed Lowe was keen to leave south Wales in the final stages of the summer window after being the subject of numerous transfer enquiries.

"I spoke to Jamal on Sunday because I’d had a few calls about people being interested in him and him expressing a desire to go somewhere else," said the Swans boss.

"I asked him outright. He was really honest and he said he would like to go because he feels maybe he doesn’t fit into the system completely. He’d had interest from a couple of clubs.

"I want people who really want to be at the club. I have no ill-feeling towards Jamal. He’s got a move which feels is good for him.

"The club have been able to replace him with Michael which probably suits us a little bit more. He is young asset and can be a real asset to the club.

"It made sense to allow Jamal to go. He did a great job last year, playing in a formation that we don’t play."

Swansea added Rhys Williams, Obafemi and Olivier Ntcham to their ranks in the final stages of the transfer window.

They were also interested in a deal for Brentford's Tariqe Fosu, although a swoop never materialised given the other business which was concluded by the Swans.

"There were a lot of plates spinning," explained Martin when asked about Fosu.

"There were a lot of things contingent on others deals. I can't get too greedy and have everything, we're working under certain parameters.

"He is a player I like, he was on lists with a host of others. It hasn't happened, he is not here so I cant dwell on it.”
