Jamal Khashoggi's fiancée 'confident' Premier League will block Newcastle United takeover

The fiancée of murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi is 'confident' the Premier League will block the Saudi-led takeover of Newcastle United.

Hatice Cengiz has written to the Premier League to oppose a deal which would see Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund take an 80% stake in the Magpies.

The bid still remains with the Premier League as the PIF, as well as the Reuben Brothers and Amanda Staveley, undergo the owners and directors test.

Washington Post journalist Khashoggi - who was critical of the Saudi regime - was murdered in October 2018. The UN and CIA claim the Saudi government was responsible, an accusation which the Crown Prince denies.

Ms Cengiz has made repeated direct and public appeals for the Premier League to block the proposed takeover on Tyneside, and she remains convinced they will have no choice to block the deal based on their own rules.

She told the Daily Star : "My communication with the Premier League achieved results, they acknowledged that they are fully considering my petition.

"I'm confident that if the Premier League follows their own rules they will block the takeover.

"There should not be an exception for Mohamed Bin Salman, he must be held accountable for his role in Jamal's murder."

"The takeover bid remains with the Premier League as Newcastle fans wait nervously for a decision."

Ms Cengiz's appeals has drawn a host of criticism from 'bot' accounts in favour of Saudi Arabia, and from United fans desperate to see a takeover.

She insists she does not hold a grudge against Magpies supporters, and would one day like to visit the "beautiful city" of Newcastle.

Ms Cengiz added: "Ever since Jamal's murder, I've been the target of so much disgusting hate from Saudi Arabia, especially their twitter bots or 'electronic flies' brigade.

"Whatever criticism I've received by fans or far-right activists is minor in comparison.

"Some of the criticism and reaction from fans is genuine but a big portion is manipulated by the electronic flies.

"I've learned to ignore these trolls and stay focused on seeking justice for Jamal."
