Jamal Agnew benched after terrible start vs. Chargers

The Jamal Agnew era as the primary return man for the Detroit Lions appears to be over. It’s certainly over in the short term.

Agnew has been benched by coach Matt Patricia after a wretched beginning to his 2019 season. A terrible effort where he was brought down by the first tackler — who subsequently ripped the ball from his hands a little too easily — was the last straw for Patricia.

Agnew put the Arizona Cardinals on the board in Week 1 with a muffed punt. He also bobbled another return attempt, and ran 30 yards to the side to gain 2 yards forward on another.

Danny Amendola has taken over as the punt returner. Rookie Ty Johnson was back deep for the opening kickoff of the second half.
