Jamaal Lascelles locked in talks on pay cuts but Toon stars keen to play part amid COVID-19 crisis

Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles is working with fellow Premier League captains to discuss pay cuts for players during the COVID-19 crisis.

Premier League chiefs stated that a 30% drop in earnings would be needed to "protect employment throughout the professional game".

The Players Football Association and the Premier League are still in negotiations on pay matters.

It is believed that Toon players had already held discussions on what they can do to play their part during the national crisis but comments from Secretary of State for Health and Social Care Matt Hancock irked United's squad and the rest of the Premier League teams last week.

Hancock had said: "Given the sacrifices that many people are making, including some of my colleagues in the NHS who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

"I think the first thing that Premier League footballers can do is make a contribution, take a pay cut and play their part."

United left-back Danny Rose donated £19,000 to North Middlesex University Hospital and it is understood that Newcastle players are also eager to put something back into the community in the North-East.

Rose is the only player to speak publicly and said: "We’re all keen to make something happen.

"I can only speak for myself but I would have no problems whatsoever contributing some of my wages to people who are fighting this on the front line and to people who have been affected by what’s happening at the minute."

Newcastle's communication breakdown has not been helped after the majority of the club's media department were placed on furlough leave last week.
