Jamaal Lascelles insists Newcastle players know they're in a relegation fight

Jamaal Lascelles rued Newcastle United's poor finishing at St James' Park after the Magpies surrendered two vital points against Wolves.

The Toon captain had powered his side in front in the second half but Newcastle crumbled late on and then wasted some glorious chances to earn a much-needed win.

It was £40 million striker Joelinton who wasted the best chance of the lot when he somehow failed to convert from 12-yards after a delicious, inviting cut-back from sub Jacob Murphy.

But somehow he managed to strike it against Romain Saiss on the line.

And it then took a fine save from Martin Dubravka to preserve a point as he denied Fabio Silva at the death.

Skipper Lascelles said: "We definitely deserved more.

"We were the better team and had a lot of chances.

"We need to do better in front of goal.

"We had plenty of good chances that you'd dream about but we didn't put them away."

Newcastle now sit precariously above Fulham and will hope that Crystal Palace can do them a favour at Selhurst Park in the lunchtime kick off.

Lascelles said: "We know the situation we're in.

"You can see by how we played and our effort, how much the game meant to us.

"It's just unfortunate we didn't come away with all three points.

"The positive thing is we're all on the same page, pushing and fighting together.

"With that, performances and results will come."
