Jamaal Lascelles hails Newcastle's work ethic in 'weirdest game' of his career

Jamaal Lascelles praised Newcastle United’s “work ethic” at Goodison Park after the Magpies staged a dramatic late fight-back on Merseyside.

Everton looked home and dry after building up a 2-0 lead to put themselves in full control.

And even when Mike Dean indicated four minutes of stoppage time it looked like Newcastle had got off lightly at only two.

But two strikes from Florian Lejeune in the 94th and 95th minute .

After the game the captain reflected: “It’s probably one of the weirdest game I’ve been involved in.

“They were the better team but we’ve come back from being two goals down and that shows the spirit and courage in this team. So we’re pleased with that.

“The work ethic carries on throughout all the game.

“They dropped off and allowed us to play, which benefited us towards the end of the game.

“We had good subs as well.”

Newcastle now face Oxford in the FA Cup with over 35,000 tickets sold so far

Lascelles said: “It would be nice to have a cup run but a lot happens in cups and you’ve got to approach it in the right way.”
