Jalen Ramsey says he won’t be receiving a contract extension in 2019

Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey revealed that he’s not expecting a contract extension in 2019, which means he’ll be playing out the final year of his rookie contract. Upon meeting the media Tuesday morning at the team’s mandatory minicamp, he stated that his camp reached out to the Jags for a deal this season, but it appears the Jaguars plan to wait until 2020 or later.

Most Jags fans figured the team would wait on a deal with Yannick Ngakoue and Myles Jack needing contracts, too, as they are on the last years of their deals. However, neither has a fifth-round option on their contracts like Ramsey, so it was a given the Jags would elect to wait until later with his deal.

The Jags picked up Ramsey’s contract option this April, and it’s projected to be worth $10 million in totality. If he plays on the deal it would bring his total NFL earnings to $32.9 million after playing through his rookie deal, which was an all guaranteed deal for four years.

It’s a bit of a shocker that the two-time Pro Bowler revealed his contract discussions for this year, but at the same time, he knows his price will only go up the longer he waits. Most would agree that he’ll be the highest-paid cornerback in football at some point, and with Xavien Howard currently holding that title thanks to his five-year, $76.5 million contract extension that guarantees $46 million, Ramsey could be looking at $50 million or more in guarantees when he gets paid.

In the meantime, the young corner seems to be rooting for his comrade Ngakoue to get his due as the young pass rusher is holding out of mandatory minicamp for an extension. Ramsey added that he’d love for Ngakoue to be around alongside him as the pass rush is key to his success and the two have become good friends being from the same draft class.
