Jalen Ramsey already showing why the Rams traded for him

If anyone is questioning why the Los Angeles Rams traded two first-round picks for Jalen Ramsey, he’s showing exactly why on Sunday against the Falcons. Although he didn’t play every single snap in the first half, he was great in coverage for the most part.

Ramsey was tasked with covering Julio Jones, one of the best receivers in the NFL, all over the field in the first half. He followed him everywhere he went and contested most of the passes that came his way. Ramsey wasn’t credited with any pass breakups, but his tight coverage made receptions touch to come by for Jones.

Jones did have four catches for 74 yards on seven targets, including a 39-yarder against Ramsey, but the mere presence of Ramsey allowed the Rams to play more aggressively on defense. They sent blitzes – even with the cornerbacks – which resulted in constant pressure on Matt Ryan. That was made possible by Ramsey being left on an island with Jones in man coverage.

Ramsey’s best play of the game came when he laid a big hit on Devonta Freeman, which caused a fumble. The Rams should’ve recovered it, but they got in each other’s way.

With Ramsey in the secondary, the Rams could shade the defense the other way. They didn’t need to send safety help over the top against Jones, which they absolutely would’ve had to do if Ramsey weren’t there.

Wade Phillips also called more man coverage across the board, having his corners press receivers at the line of scrimmage. That gives the pass rush more time to work, which led to two sacks, six hits and countless pressures – and not just by Aaron Donald, either.

Ramsey’s swagger and confidence was also on display, jawing with Jones after nearly every incompletion.

Ramsey may not have completely shut down Jones, but him being on the field gave the Rams many more options. It’s exactly why Los Angeles went out and got Ramsey from the Jaguars.

After three weeks of not practicing or playing, too, Ramsey looked as good as advertised.
