Jake Tapper and Megyn Kelly jump to Piers Morgan's defence following his GMB exit

Two of America's leading media figures have voiced their support for former Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan following the 55-year-old's shock departure from the show in the aftermath of his Meghan Markle comments.

CNN anchor Jake Tapper and former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly have praised Piers for his actions and say he has been treated unfairly.

Piers' comments towards Meghan led to 41,000 complaints by viewers to Ofcom but Jake said that the complaints were "insanity".

"This is what happens when you live in a country where there is no First amendment. Insanity," the 51-year-old said.

His views however were met with dismay by Twitter users, which prompted him to tell them tweet: "Ok UK friends, we disagree. Thanks for your replies."

Megyn also chimed in with support for Piers on his personal Twitter account, tweeting: "I don't know what happened w/ @piersmorgan at GMB.

"What I do know is he & Susannah [sic] have been a brilliant team that took risks & became must-watch TV.

"In an era of free speech being stifled everywhere, Piers fearlessly speaks his mind. We need more, not fewer like that in media."

It comes after Piers ended his six-year stint as a presenter on the show abruptly after storming of the set on Tuesday morning.

The presenter was caught up in a heated debate with the Alex Beresford regarding the Meghan and Harry interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The weather presenter branded his colleague's behaviour as "diabolical" prompting Piers to storm off the set ranting "Sorry, no… sorry, can’t do this…"

Piers returned shortly after to take up the argument with Alex once again.

Show producers had reportedly asked Piers to apologise on air, but he refused.

Later in the day, ITV said: "Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain.

"ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add."

His permanent exit has been met with mixed responses online with some fans of the show claiming "good riddance".

The decision is said to have left the show's co-host Susanna Reid in tears.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
