Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua press conference LIVE: Updates from first face-off in Miami

Jake Paul vs Anthony Joshua press conference LIVE!

Anthony Joshua comes face to face with Jake Paul today for the first time since their fight was announced. Joshua, 36, is set to return to the ring after 15 months away in a blockbuster heavyweight showdown broadcast live on Netflix on December 19.

He takes on YouTuber-turned-boxer Paul at Kaseya Center in Miami as the headline bout of a stacked card that also features the likes of Alycia Baumgardner, Anderson Silva and Tyron Woodley. Paul is 12-1 in his professional career, suffering his only defeat to Tommy Fury back in 2023. The American has since defeated the likes of Mike Perry, Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, but facing Joshua - at heavyweight - will be his sternest by far.

Most boxing fans have criticised the event, labelling it as potentially dangerous for Paul, but ‘The Problem Child’ is undaunted. WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis was supposed to fight him in an exhibition this month, only for that contest to be cancelled. Tommy Fury 'a lost puppy', calls out KSI

18:37 , Oli Gent

Paul calls out Tommy Fury and KSI once more.

“He’s lost; no-one watches his fights. I’m the only thing that he’s got. He should be on his knees begging. We did offer him it, but he said he wanted more time. It’s the same with KSI. These guys just don’t want to step up to the plate.”

AJ laughs off Fury opinion

18:35 , Oli Gent

“I’m not worried with what Tyson Fury is saying. It’s not about the money. I’m betting on myself.”

'He's going to have to kill me'

18:34 , Oli Gent

“I want him to cut me up, I want him to break my face. He’s going to have to kill me. I’m seriously ready to die.” Paul says.

'I need to cut him up'

18:32 , Oli Gent

“I need to cut him up, I need to break him up, and I need to hurt him,” Joshua says.

'He should be up here' - AJ on Ngannou

18:30 , Oli Gent

“If he wants to fight, rather than talking, be about it.”

'Ngannou is a joke'

18:29 , Oli Gent

Paul slams Francis Ngannou, calling the Cameroonian a “dumb a**”.

“He’s stuck in mud. He’s an easy fight as a boxer.”

'I can fight free' - Paul

18:28 , Oli Gent

“If he starts getting touched up and losing rounds, I think the cookie will crumble.”

Bold statement from Paul

18:26 , Oli Gent

"I'm knocking this guy out, becoming the CEO of Matchroom Boxing and changing the plans. It's going to be me vs Tyson Fury next year."

Interesting.

Joshua makes prediction

18:25 , Oli Gent

“I’m going to break his face, his body,” he says.

“I’m going to stomp all over him.”

Joshua reveals coaching team

18:23 , Oli Gent

The Briton won’t be training with Ben Davison for this bout, instead he has been in Spain with Oleksandr Usyk’s team, although he hasn’t sparred the Ukrainian.

Both confirm their weights

18:22 , Oli Gent

Jake Paul says he should weigh between 215 and 225lbs for the fight.

Paul makes prediction

18:15 , Oli Gent

“Fighting a smaller man is harder as a heavyweight,” the Problem Child says.

“The speed difference, foot speed, angles because of the head being off centre. All that power is great, I just have to avoid that one shot for eight rounds, and I believe that I can do that.

“I know I can pick him apart and score points and make this a very big contest.”

Joshua labels Paul 'logical'

18:13 , Oli Gent

“I don’t think he’s crazy,” he says.

“I think he’s a logical person. He knows what he can do and he knows something within himself. All he needs is belief in himself.

“It’s not about being crazy. It’s about knowing what you can do and that’s all that matters.”

'A great opportunity'

18:12 , Oli Gent

“It was a great opportunity for me to fight. I wanted to take 12 months out. I’ve done that, and it’s time to get back to work. I was planning on fighting anyway. I would have been fighting this weekend had I had it my way. I said yeah, why not [to this opportunity]. It’s colossal. It’s making big news. We’re bringing marketability with ability. Those worlds collide.”

'I've got to where I am out of delusional optimism'

18:09 , Oli Gent

The American is full of confidence.

“It’s delusion, until it’s not. Look at where we’re sitting today. No-one ever thought this would be possible. That we would be here when I first started boxing, and no-one thinks I’m going to win. Join the list, and be ready to be shocked.”

'Are you alright, my man?'

18:07 , Oli Gent

... Helwani asks.

“I like to challenge myself,” Paul responds.

“I like to take on the biggest and the best. I said anyone, anytime, any place, and I truly mean that. I’m here to go out and shock the world. I know what I’m capable of. I see him, and what he’s capable of. We’re going to go to war.”

Here we go then...

How on earth did we get here?

In September 2018, Joshua held the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO championship belts, having knocked out Alexander Povetkin to stretch his record to 22-0.

Just a month before, Paul stepped into a fight for the very first time to face KSI’s brother - and fellow YouTuber - Deji on the undercard of KSI vs Logan Paul at the Manchester Arena. Paul won in a white-collar bout with headguards.

Now, seven years on, he might not be the most popular amongst purists, but the American is one of the biggest names in the sport of boxing.

He was scheduled to face WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis this month an a high-profile exhibition, but that fell through as a result of Tank’s legal troubles.

Since then, Joshua has stepped in to give Paul his toughest test yet, and to show fighting fans that he still deserves a crack at the very top of the heavyweight division.
