Jake Paul receives unlikely support after suggesting change to boxing rules

Jake Paul has the backing of former world champion boxer Paulie Malignaggi in his suggestion for a judging rule change after Josh Taylor's win over Jack Catterall on Saturday.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer was horrified by the controversial split-decision that saw mega underdog Catterall narrowly miss out on the undisputed super-lightweight title.

And he took to social media to suggest a new judging system, in which there would be teams of two deliberating on their decisions as opposed to just three judges who are rarely questioned.

"I think there should be six boxing judges for title fights," Paul wrote in a post to his 4.2million followers. "Three pairs of two.

"Each pair has to agree on the same score at the end of the round and if they don’t they briefly debate their reasoning.

"Almost like a jury system - these poor decisions change the shape of the sport forever."

This piqued the interest of Malignaggi, a former fighter not known to be a fan of Paul's, who replied to the YouTuber's tweet with the message of support, saying: "Not a bad idea actually".

Paul's initial suggestion was liked by over 6,000 people, and a number of Twitter users actually supported the idea despite the social media star's general lack of popularity with boxing fans.

However, some made the argument that his idea, which would see judging teams debate their scores during the one-minute interval between rounds, wouldn't be feasible given the time constraints.

A brief debate within just 60 seconds may be too short to effectively make change, with some fans instead calling for the introduction of open scoring.

And even Paul wasn't 100 per cent sure of the idea, later clarifying with a tweet saying: "Or something like this idea. This is just a quick little brainstorm."

Malignaggi has called for a fight with Paul, although the YouTube star didn't seem too keen on the idea when asked about it.

"I want to see Jake Paul vs a real boxer," Malignaggi said during a video on his YouTube channel. "I think it's going to be an older guy.

"But it can't just be an older guy nobody's ever heard of… A little bit older, a little bit smaller. He's gonna hit him, so maybe not the biggest puncher. Err, Paulie Malignaggi?

"There is a lot of talk including Chavez Jr, but I personally think that he beats Jake Paul. I think Paul was having trouble with Tyron Woodley until he knocked him out.

"If anything don't think he can take on a boxer in his prime."

However, Paul responded by saying that he didn't know who Malignaggi was amid a host of other callouts.

“I don’t know who half these guys are to be honest," Paul told talkSPORT. “People are calling me out every week, and almost every day honestly.

“I don’t really pay attention to it anymore. It’s more, ‘Who do I wanna fight? And who would make me excited to get out of bed and go train my ass off for months?’

“That’s the opponent I’m looking for. But all these other guys are probably just looking for a payday. I want to fight towards the end of the year. the opponent is to be determined and there’s no clear pathway now. I’m just seeing how the cookie crumbles.”
