The longest standing scholastic short course yardage swimming record has finally been topped.
As reported by Swimming World Magazine, Mill Creek (Ga.) High School junior Jake Magahey broke the longstanding “high school yards” record for the 500 free. The record, set on a short course, was clocked with a time of 4:15.63 at the 2019 Georgia 6-7A State Swimming and Diving Championships at Georgia Tech’s McAuley Natatorium. That’s nearly a second faster than the previous mark, set and held by Upland (Calif.) High School alum Jeff Kostoff, dating back all the way to 1983.

While Magahey’s time set a new high school yards mark, it is still short of the overall mark, the National Independent High School record of 4:12.87.
Magahey remains one of the nation’s top uncommitted junior swimmers, and a force of nature in the pool. In the 6-7A State Swimming and Diving Championships, capturing the state title in the 200 free, the 200 free relay and and 400 free relay.
With Kostoff’s record relegated to second, there is just one remaining scholastic mark that predates the turn of the century: Tracy Caulkins, then of Harpeth Hall in Nashville, still holds the 100 breaststroke record of 1:07.47, tops for both short course and independent school records in 1981.
