Having proved a critical hit on Broadway in Constellations, Jake Gyllenhaal is extending his repertoire to stage musicals.

The star will play nerdy florist Seymour Krelborn in Little Shop of Horrors for three performances at City Center in New York on 1 and 2 July.

The plot sees Krelborn try to woo his scatty co-worker Audrey with a carnivorous plant. Audrey is played by Ellen Greene, who starred in the original production and 1986 film.

Saturday Night Live comic Taran Killam will play the sadistic dentist Orin Scrivello, Krelborn’s rival in love, played by Steve Martin in the movie.

While this will mark his debut, Gyllenhaal is not entirely a stranger to musicals. He once performed And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going from Dreamgirls in drag on Saturday Night Live.
