Jake Doyle-Hayes joins St Mirren as Jim Goodwin strengthens squad for relegation battle

St Mirren have signed midfielder Jake Doyle-Hayes on a one-year contract after his release from Aston Villa.

The Irishman played 36 times on-loan for Cheltenham last season and was also loaned to Cambridge during his time at the English Premiership club.

21-year-old Hayes-Doyle will take the shirt number seven at Saints, which was vacated by club captain Kyle Magennis when he left for Hibs at the end of the transfer window.

The Republic of Ireland U21 international told St Mirren's website: "I've had a lot of interest during the window but when I heard St Mirren were interested it caught my attention straight away.

"I've followed the league and I liked how enthusiastic the manager was when we spoke. I was delighted with the interest and I wanted to get it done as soon as I could.

"All the lads have helped me settle in really quick and I've really enjoyed the first few days I've been here.”

The Buddies haven’t played since a 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen on October 2 after having games against Hamilton and Motherwell postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests.

They were then due to take on Celtic at the weekend but the Scottish Premiership champions were on Scottish Cup semi-final duty.

But Jim Goodwin’s men will finally return to competitive action when they host Dundee United in Paisley on Friday night.
