April 27--CINCINNATI -- A .143 batting average might convince the Cubs' starting pitchers to lobby to have the designated hitter instituted in the National League.
But Jake Arrieta wasn't so sure, even in the wake of a potential season-ending Achilles injury suffered by Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals.
"I don't have a strong opinion," said Arrieta, who went 0-for-3 Sunday in a 5-2 win over the Reds and is hitless in 10 at-bats this season. "I like to hit. I'm hitting (lousy), but we put the time and effort. We take it seriously even though we're not major league quality hitters. It's part of the game, and we have to put work into it. I think a lot of people want to see the DH implemented around the league. I wouldn't care one way or another. If they do add that, it's going to strength to each National League lineup a little bit."
Arrieta admitted he watched several replays of Wainwright's injury because there didn't seem to be anything unusual that caused the potential tear.
"Everyone makes that same movement (out of the batter's box), and it's one of those things that can happen at any moment, which is scary. It kind of makes my cringe to think about that. But (adding the DH) something that will come up because of that situation. But I don't know."
