Jaishankar in Mexico for independence celebrations

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is scheduled to meet his Mexican counterpart Marcelo Ebrard and also President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Monday. Mr. Jaishankar, who is on a three-day visit to Mexico earlier, said in a social media message he intended to participate in the celebrations marking the 200th anniversary of the Mexican independence.

“Participating in the celebrations of Mexico’s 200th anniversary of attaining independence. We are working together in the UN Security Council. India is Mexico’s 9th largest trade partner,” said Mr. Jaishankar in his message on arriving in Mexico City. He also pointed out that this was the first visit by an Indian External Affairs Minister in 41 years.

As part of the celebrations, Mexico launched an exhibition titled “La Grandeza de Mexico” on Monday in the presence of foreign dignitaries. The exhibition is meant to showcase cultural and historical artefacts.

India and Mexico are serving as non-permanent members of the Security Council which is discussing global hotspots like Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Myanmar.
