Jaipur’s overflowing gutters, choked sewer lines give locals ‘stinky’ time

JAIPUR: Choked sewerage lines are giving residents of several wards a hard time after they started overflowing and stinking.

A few months ago, JMC Greater had handed sewercleaning tenders to various contactors in every zone.

For seven zones, three contractors were hired, who were supposed to use machines provided by the corporation, maintain them and employ labour. Many councilors have complained that the cleaning was not being done properly.

Ramprasad Sharma, councilor from Ward 125, said the sewerage lines in the area were clogged for the last 15 days and the residents were finding it difficult to breathe due to the foul smell.

"We can adjust if garbage vehicles do not come on time, but we can’t do much when sewer lines begin to overflow and stink. We have filed several complaints with the JMC, but to no avail. Things get worse during monsoon," said Shar ma.

The contract for Malviya Nagar was cancelled within two months as the contractors did a shoddy job. Rajula Singh, councilor from Ward 130, said the ward will continue to face similar issues if the three-decade-old sewerage lines were not changed by the administration.

Another councilor from Vidhyadhar Nagar, requesting anonymity, said, "We need to complain several times for our issues to be heard. Councilors have even complained to the mayor in a public meeting about the unsatisfactory work."

A senior JMC official, on condition of anonymity, said they were receiving several complaints from different wards even after giving out contracts.

"The problem will persist as the population has increased and the sewerage lines are old. We have purchased new sewer-jetting machines and distributed them. But changing lines will need huge investment. Until that is done, the work of contractors will never be good enough," said the official.
