JAIPUR: Several high-profile crime cases that grabbed public attention for several days have been left cold by Jaipur police. Cases of rape, loot, thefts and accidents have hit the wall as suspects either remain unidentified or absconding.
In the most glaring example, a 23-year-old girl returning from a party was raped in Bhankrota on June 7, but even after several weeks, Bhankrota police have yet to make any breakthrough in the case.
DCP (west) Pradeep Mohan Sharma claimed that efforts were afoot to arrest the accused. The reality, however, is sobering.
As many criminal cases take longer to unravel, investigators’ chances of arresting the suspects also become increasingly grim. This is evident from two cases of thefts that took place in Chitrakoot and Vaishali Nagar.
On July 5, thieves sneaked into Suhag Jewellers, a showroom located under Chitrakoot police station area, and fled with jewelry and cash worth Rs 15 lakh. Owner Shashi Kant Soni told TOI that he met several police officials about the case.
Meanwhile, Chitrakoot SHO Panna Lal Jangid said no arrest could be made, but police teams were still continuing to follow up on leads for suspects.
Barely a few metres away from Suhag Jewellers, another daring heist took place across the street at a newly opened mobile showroom. The accused broke into the showroom on August 5 and decamped with over 90 mobile phones worth Rs 50 lakh. To date, no suspect has been arrested.
Vaishali Nagar police claimed that the heist was staged by one Ghorasahan gang, but they could not identify any of the accused. The case is now also being investigated by the crime branch. Similarly, on July 17, a speeding car had rammed into a 30-year-old man near Shivdaspura. Surprisingly, the body was found 20-km away in Shipra Path.
The police had identified the driver but he remained off the hook. “The driver has not been arrested yet, but we will be in cop net soon,” said Shivdaspura SHO Bhupendra Singh.

The list of unsolved cases does not augur well for city cops. While more efforts are needed to step up investigation into some cases, it is equally important to bring the guilty to justice so that people’s trust on the force does not waver.
