Jailed TV journalist's kin seeks probe

The family of a former digital television reporter has sought the Justice Ministry's help to push for a re-investigation into a case in which the reporter was found guilty of masterminding an attempted murder in Prachuap Khiri Khan in 2013.

However, the ministry said the evidence presented by convict Natcha Thongyoi's family was incomplete.

Deputy permanent secretary for justice Pol Col Dussadee Arayawuth said he would need new information to order a re-investigation into the case.

Also, the family must submit proof that the evidence provided by the plaintiff in court that led to the former reporter's conviction was false.

Natcha, a former Spring News reporter, has already served five months behind bars at the Prachuap Khiri Khan provincial courthouse.

The lower court sentenced her to six years and eight months in jail and the Appeal Court later reduced the sentence to two years without a suspended jail term.

Natcha's mother, Riam Thongyoi, and her elder brother, Surakrai Thongyoi, went to the Justice Ministry on Monday to file a petition seeking a re-investigation.

Mr Surakrai said that on Jan 4, 2013, his elder brother, Suchart Thongyoi, had a heated argument with a relative over a land dispute.

During the fight, Suchart took out a gun and fired three shots, seriously injuring the relative. The victim said that before Suchart pulled the trigger, Natcha had rushed to the scene and encouraged Suchart to shoot. The court later ordered Suchart to be imprisoned for 10 years after he confessed to the crime.

Two months after the shooting, the relative filed legal action against Natcha, alleging she had masterminded the attempted murder. She denied the charge. The case against Natcha reached the Appeal Court which upheld the charge against her, but reduced the sentence.

The family paid the injured relative 120,000 baht in compensation. The relative, however, has demanded four million baht, which the family could not afford.

Pol Col Dussadee, meanwhile, said he has agreed to take into consideration the family's appeal.
