Sex offenders are being freed from Brixton prison without undergoing behaviour reform because too few courses are available, a watchdog has warned.

The Independent Monitoring Board said inmates serving time for sex crimes were meant to take “offender behaviour programmes”.

In the board’s annual report on the prison, published on Thursday, it said “many men” were being released without help as places were not available.

It praised efforts to stop the inflow of drugs, but said not enough is being done to prevent reoffending.

Brixton has an entire wing dedicated to sex offenders, most of whom are meant to complete rehabilitative courses before release.

This often fails to happen and “37 men will be released without completing a required programme because they have too little time left to serve”.
