Jailed ex-mayor hospitalised after hurting himself in prison exercise yard

Jailed former Ipswich mayor Paul Pisasale has been taken to hospital after hurting himself while doing chin-ups in the prison exercise yard at Wacol.

The 67-year-old injured himself at Wolston Correction Centre this morning and was taken by ambulance to the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Corrective Services said he was being treated for a shoulder injury in the hospital's secure unit.

Pisasale was sentenced to two years in jail last week, with his sentence to be suspended once he serves 12 months in custody.

He was found guilty of extortion when he posed as a private investigator and demanded thousands of dollars from the ex-boyfriend of a Chinese escort he had been seeing.

It took the jury about eight hours to reach its verdict on Wednesday.

Once dubbed "Mr Ipswich", Pisasale was first elected to council in March 1991 and had four terms as mayor.

He resigned as mayor in June 2017 from a hospital in which he was being treated for multiple sclerosis, a day after the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) searched his office and home.

It is not yet known when he will return to prison.
