Jailed: Drunk dad who carjacked a gran on Christmas Eve as she took presents to family

A grandmother was carjacked on Christmas Eve as she was driving to her family to deliver presents.

The woman was dragged out of her van as Patrick Ward, 27, then drove off in it following the incident in Middleton.

Police chased him on the M60 and then into Oldham, and Ward was only stopped after a stinger blew out his tyres.

A judge told Ward he should be 'thoroughly ashamed' of himself, before jailing him for four years and four months.

Minshull Street Crown Court heard that at about 10pm on Christmas Eve, 2018, the woman was travelling to see her grandchildren to deliver presents, including a Playstation and aftershave.

After missing her turning, she went to reverse and turn around in a cul-de-sac.

Suddenly the doors to her van were opened, and she saw two men with their hoods up.

She was grabbed by the shoulder and pulled out of the vehicle, falling to the ground and landing to her shoulder, prosecutor Daniel Calder said.

Ward got into the driver's seat, his accomplice in the passenger seat, and they drove off with the Christmas presents in the back.

The van later went to a petrol station in Stockport, where £30 of fuel was taken but only £5 was paid for it.

It was later located on the M60, and police began to chase the van.

Ward turned off at junction 23, and began to drive through Ashton then onto Ashton Road towards Oldham.

He was eventually stopped after police used a stinger device.

The victim said she felt 'violated' and was left with a badly bruised shoulder, which she took painkillers for.

She stopped driving because she lost her confidence, and now she feels she has also lost her independence.

Ward was also sentenced for the theft of his former partner's mobile phone after he barged into her house in the early hours, taking the phone as she tried to call the police.

Defending, Adam Watkins said Ward, a father-of-two, was 'very intoxicated' at the time of the carjacking.

He said Ward had gone 'off the rails' since the breakdown of his relationship.

Judge Potter told Ward: "That incident of carjacking was on any view a particularly mean offence, which clearly will have caused her significant upset and harm to a family at Christmas."

Ward, of Wimpole Street, Oldham, pleaded guilty to theft, robbery, making off without payment, driving while disqualified, failing to provide a specimen and driving without insurance.

He was also banned from driving for five years and two months, and a restraining order was imposed in relation to his former partner.
