Jailed after meat cleaver attack that left wound behind victim's ear

A man has been jailed for 18 months for a meat cleaver attack in Motherwell.

Jamie Nisbet, 30, a prisoner, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday.

He admitted assaulting John Main to his severe injury in McClurg Court on January 18.

The court heard the men were in a group who were taking drugs at a flat there.

An argument broke out and Mr Main was assaulted.

He didn’t want the police involved, but CCTV showed Nisbet brandishing the meat cleaver.

The blow caused a 3cm wound behind Mr Main’s ear that was cleaned and patched up in hospital.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said Nisbet picked up the blade because he feared Mr Main was about to attack him.

Nisbet also admitted punching, kicking and spitting on his partner Lorraine Hutchison in Merryton Tower, Motherwell, on April 23.

He has been in custody since his arrest then.

Mr Bruce told the court: “He has had difficult times, but he has used his time in prison constructively and is now off drugs.”

Sheriff Ray Small sentenced Nisbet, who admitted previous convictions, to 18 months for the machete attack with an extra six months for assaulting Ms Hutchison.

The two-year stretch was backdated to April 24.
