Jail for man who said he grew cannabis to relieve Parkinson's symptoms

A man with Parkinson's disease who said he was growing cannabis to relieve symptoms has been sent to prison.

Police investigating an unrelated matter could smell cannabis from Michael Smith's home.

When they returned and carried out a search the next day they found he had two mother cannabis plants as well as 70 cannabis cuttings in his garage and a secret room.

Smith, 53, of The Street in Chew Stoke, Bristol, pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis.

Judge Mark Horton jailed him for eight months.

He told him: "What you created here from 2018, from seed, was an extremely sophisticated system, not some kind of small hobby garden affair.

"This was very sophisticated, not only in arrangement but also in concealment."

The judge ordered that the plants be destroyed.

What happens during a legal trial?

Charley Pattison, prosecuting via video link, told Bristol Crown Court police searched Smith's garage on June 19 last year and found 70 cannabis cuttings being grown and a hidden area containing two cannabis plants.

She said; "On June 20 Mr Smith was identified.

"He made admissions about growing for personal use to make cannabinoid oil for Parkinson's Disease.

Miss Pattison said the estimated value of Smith's Crop was in the range of £14,000 to £42,000.

Daniel Woodman, defending, said his client had Parkinson's disease and was due to have deep brain stimulation treatment.

Mr Woodman told the court: "He continues to say a significant proportion (of the cannabis) was for personal use to try to alleviate symptoms.".
