Jail for man who attacked ex-partner thinking she had new relationship

A woman trying to evade her ex-partner was attacked by him after he tracked her down.

Rosie Oldland moved home to get away from Haydon Morgan, Bristol Crown Court heard today (September 4, 2019)

But he turned up at her Bristol address and assaulted her.

Morgan, 26, of Brook Road in Speedwell, pleaded guilty to assault, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage in August.

He appeared in court via video link from HMP Bristol.

Judge Michael Longman jailed him for 17 months.

He told Morgan: "You were uninvited and you were unwelcome.

"You believed her to be in a new relationship and that made you jealous.

"That, and alcohol, goes to explain your violent behaviour."

Morgan was handed a five-year restraining order banning him from contact with Miss Oldland.

Nicholas Lee, prosecuting, said Morgan turned up at her new address, believing she was seeing another man.

After he struck her to the face she tried to call police, but Morgan kept taking her phone, the court heard.

When they went to a shop around 10.40pm, Morgan head-butted her and she fled to the store for help before Morgan head-butted her again.

Mr Lee told the court that when a friend turned up to help Miss Oldland, Morgan dented the door of her Audi car and repeatedly punched Miss Oldland to the head and face.

Miss Oldland made an impact statement saying she did not want Morgan's actions to define her.

The court heard Morgan had previous convictions for assault, criminal damage, robbery and a public order offence.

James Tucker, defending, said his client had volunteered himself to police.

He told the court: "He would benefit from a Building Better Relationships Programme.

"This is an ugly offence."
