Jail for man caught with knives in car on Larkhall road

A dad of two caught with two knives in a car has been jailed for a year at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

Thomas Munro, a prisoner, admitted having the blades in a vehicle in Keir Hardie Road, Larkhall, on February 3.

He was on bail for another matter when it happened.

Paula Russell, prosecuting, said cops saw the car taking an “unusual” route shortly after midnight and signalled for it to stop.

She told the court: “Munro was in the passenger seat and wasn’t happy about being stopped.

“He was asked several times to calm down. He was agitated and the pupils of his eyes were dilated. Officers decided to do a search under the Misuse of Drugs Act.

“Two kitchen knives were found under the passenger seat where he was sitting. One had a seven-inch blade and the other a four-inch blade.”

Munro (27) has previous convictions for assault involving a knife and threatening or abusive behaviour with a blade.

Sheriff Douglas Brown pointed out that under a car seat was “an unusual place to store knives”.

Defence agent Diarmid Bruce explained that his client had been getting his house renovated and
had “re-located” items including knives and a kettle to his mother’s home.

He had put them back in the car, intending to take them home again, but forgot to remove them.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Brown told Munro: “It remains a serious offence when people have knives when they are going places. I have to offer some form of protection to the public.”
