A man's drug-fuelled joy ride caused a nightmare for a Brisbane family when the stolen car he was driving slammed head-on into another vehicle, a court has been told.
Jordan Joseph Cubby killed father-of-one Shahid Islam and another person before spitting blood and saliva at a police officer.
He pleaded guilty in a Brisbane court on Monday to two counts of manslaughter and a string of other charges relating to offences committed in October last year.
The drugged-up 29-year-old was behind the wheel of the stolen 4WD when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road at Bald Hills, north of Brisbane on October 15.
It ploughed into another vehicle on Gympie Arterial Road, killing Mr Islam in the impact.
Thirty-two-year-old John Weatherall, the front-seat passenger in the car driven by Cubby, also died, while a woman in the back seat was critically injured.
The vehicle was stolen from Toowoomba the day before the collision, the Brisbane Supreme Court heard.
It was sighted by police about 10 minutes before the crash, but Cubby - who was disqualified from driving at the time - drove away when officers tried to intercept the car, ignoring pleas by his female passenger to slow down.
Police drove at up to 145km/h before abandoning the pursuit when Cubby continued to drive at a dangerously high speed and on the wrong side of the road at times.
It was behaviour that made an injury or death inevitable, Justice Elizabeth Wilson said.
After travelling about 15km in seven minutes - most likely reaching 160km/h - Cubby slammed into Mr Islam's car.
After the crash an injured Cubby was trapped in the vehicle, swearing at officers who told him help was on the way.
For 20 minutes he kicked at the rear and front windscreens until he made a hole large enough to climb through, standing on Mr Weatheerall's body as he got out.
While police restrained him Cubby spat blood and saliva at one officer.
Justice Wilson said Mr Islam's death had a significant impact on the life of his wife and child.
"She arrived in Australia from Bangladesh ... The victim and his wife studied hard and they worked hard to build their Australian dream of having a better life," she told Cubby in handing down his sentence.
"You have shattered this; because of you, there is a son without a father and a wife without a husband.
"Their future together has been taken away by you ... Your joy ride caused a nightmare for her family."
Justice Wilson handed Cubby a head sentence of 14-and-a-half years in jail.
He will be eligible for parole on September 11, 2030.
