Jail for carer who shared video of distressed client

A carer who shared a video he made of his distressed client has been jailed.

Merrill Troy Thompson appeared at Bristol Magistrates' Court on February 10.

The 42-year-old, of Waterloo Street in Carmarthenshire, pleaded guilty to ill-treating or wilfully neglecting the person he was caring for in Kingswood between September 1 and 7, 2019.

Magistrates jailed him for 20 weeks.

Thompson was caring for a blind person with hearing loss and behaviour difficulties.

Magistrates said they imposed an "unavoidable" prison sentence because he chose to film the client in distress and share the video with others.

They said Thompson had abused the trust placed in him by the victim's family, the victim, and Thompson's employer.

They told Thompson he had a professional responsibility for the victim, who was unaware of what Thompson was doing due to their difficulties.

Thompson was ordered to pay £128 compensation and £85 costs to the Crown Prosecution Service, totalling £213, by May 10.
