Jail for Canberra bikie found with explosives, WWII-era rifle

A former Canberra bikie has been sentenced to nearly six years in jail after police found explosives and dangerous weapons at his girlfriend's house last year.

Stephen da Silva-Wilson, 25, was sentenced for 14 offences in the ACT Magistrates Court that included drug trafficking and domestic violence.

Da Silva-Wilson was a member of the Canberra branch of the Nomads bikie gang, but maintains he has now left.

The court heard when police went to search his girlfriend's home they had to evacuate the area after finding the explosives — with detonators — in a backpack inside a dryer in the garage.

Among the guns found were a World War II-era self-loading military rifle and a Smith and Wesson revolver.

Significant amounts of drugs, including MDMA and methylamphetamines, were also found along with paraphernalia that Magistrate Beth Campbell described as consistent with drug trafficking.

Da Silva-Wilson told a pre-sentence report author he had been asked to store the items for another gang member.

But Magistrate Campbell said there was no innocent explanation.

"There is no legitimate purpose for possessing a military rifle," she said.

She also noted other items, including a trench knife, which is a knuckleduster and knife in one, had only one purpose — to cause harm.

She said the crimes were repugnant to the community.

Da Silva-Wilson has been sentenced to five years and nine months jail, with a non-parole period of three years and four months.
