Jail for burglar who used bank cards he stole from his victims' homes

A burglar who used bank cards he stole from his victims has been locked up for four-and-a-half years.

Derek Foster, 45, pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary and also admitted associated fraud offences relating to the use of stolen bank cards.

On March 30 last year, Foster was involved in a burglary at a house on Woodborough Road, Mapperley, during which electrical items, clothing and computer games were stolen.

Foster, of no fixed address, used the victim's bank card in a shop.

He also pleaded guilty to a burglary at a house on Peveril Street in Radford on May 27 last year.

About 15 minutes after the burglary Foster was caught on CCTV cameras using the victim's stolen bank cards at a local store.

Foster was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, January 14

After he was initially arrested by police and brought into custody he was found to be in possession of £800 which he was unable to account for and was believed to have been gained through his criminality.

Police seized the cash and the court ordered for it to be returned to the Woodborough Road burglary victim as compensation.

Detective Constable Tim Townsend, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "Foster is a prolific offender and homes will be more secure now that he has been put behind bars.

"Burglary is a clear invasion of people’s homes, where they should feel their safest.

"Foster's actions were extremely distressing for the victims but hopefully this sentence will bring some comfort to them.

"I'm also pleased that we were able to return a considerable amount of cash to one of the victims as was ordered by the court.

"Burglary is a priority for Nottinghamshire Police, with dedicated burglary teams now focused on tackling and reducing burglary in the city and county.

"We want to reassure the people of Nottinghamshire that we will continue to pursue those committing burglaries and remain committed to catching those responsible and bringing them to justice."
