Jaguars sign wide receiver Terrelle Pryor

Terrelle Pryor signed with the Jaguars on Monday and took the field for their seventh organized team activities session.

Pryor went through individual drills and took 11-on-11 reps during team periods, though his workload was somewhat limited as the Jaguars tried to ease him in.

"We're going to be smart," coach Doug Marrone said before Monday's session began. "He really hasn't done anything with us. I'm sure he's been working hard, so we'll slowly bring him in."

Pryor, 29, has 115 catches for 1,563 yards and seven touchdowns in 51 NFL games. Most of that production came with the Cleveland Browns in 2016, when he totaled 77 catches for 1,007 yards and four scores.

Pryor has struggled to duplicate his big season with the Browns. He caught just 20 passes for 240 yards and one touchdown with the Washington Redskins in 2017. Last year, he played eight games with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, totaling 16 catches for 252 yards and two scores.

That lack of consistency is likely why Pryor was a free agent at this point in the offseason, but he offers the Jaguars a big-bodied receiver with some speed. Listed at 6-foot-4 and 228 pounds, Pryor could be a threat in the red zone and working outside the numbers.

There's also some familiarity in the building. Pryor worked with offensive coordinator John DeFilippo for one season in Cleveland (2015) and two seasons with the Oakland Raiders (2012-13). Pryor began his NFL career at quarterback before transitioning to receiver before the 2015 season.

"He is very smart," Marrone said. "I think he has communicated well up until this point, which I've only had limited communication (with him). I think that he is a big athlete with a good catch radius, and I think he will be in position to compete for a job, and I'm sure he hopes to get back to the season that he had a couple years ago where he really had a heck of a year."

Pryor's arrival should help a receiver position that Marrone feels has been low on numbers.

Marqise Lee continues to rehab from a torn ACL sustained last preseason and isn't expected back on the field before training camp. Dede Westbrook has also been absent from several OTAs, including Monday. That left the Jaguars with just eight receivers before Pryor was added.

Barring a setback in Lee's recovery, Pryor will need a big offseason program and training camp to make the team. The Jaguars seem comfortable with Lee, Westbrook, DJ Chark, Chris Conley and Keelan Cole. Pryor's task is to bring enough to the offense to convince the Jaguars to keep six receivers or move on from someone such as Cole.

To make room for Pryor on the 90-man roster, the Jaguars waived defensive lineman Lyndon Johnson, who had offseason foot surgery and was expected back for training camp.
