Jaguars sign sixth-round pick Gardner Minshew

After releasing Cody Kessler Thursday afternoon, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to lock up a player who could be his future replacement. Sixth-round selection Gardner Minshew came to terms with the team prior to the kickoff for rookie minicamp, which means he can now focus on being Nick Foles’ backup.

Minshew, 22, played his senior season at Washington State where he was able to establish himself as one of the most productive quarterbacks of the 2018 NCAA season. While leading the Cougars to an 11–2 season, he completed 468-of-662 passes (70.7 percent) for 4,776 yards 38 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Prior to that, he had a rough run at East Carolina University where he was only able to acquire three wins in two season, but in reflecting back on the lows (and the highs) Minshew told Jaguars.com that it was all worth it for Thursday’s moment.

“It was all worth it,” Minshew said. “Even the down parts were still a lot of fun. I’m getting to play football at this age. Anything past high school is blessing. To be, here, it’s something I always dreamed of.”

Minshew will now battle Tanner Lee and Alex McGough this offseason for a shot to be the No. 2 QB on the final 53-man roster. Per Over the Cap, his contract is a four-year deal worth over $2.71 million, with just under $543K being payed out in Year 1.
