Jaguars routed by Colts 33-13 in Nick Foles' return game

INDIANAPOLIS It appeared the Jaguars were ready for a much need mid-season jolt.

They had their franchise quarterback back and they were well-rested and healed up after coming off a bye week.

But after Foles' directed the Jaguars on their only touchdown drive of the game Sunday against the Colts in the first quarter, the Jaguars were handed a cruel reality check.

The Colts showed they are more of a playoff contender than the Jaguars in their 33-13 victory at Lucas Oil Stadium.

It was on display from the moment after quarterback Nick Foles connected with DJ Chark on a 34-yard touchdown pass.

Early on, Foles was on point. He appeared unfazed and comfortable in the pocket, despite playing for the first time first time since Week 1 against Kansas City, when he suffered a broken left collarbone.

He stayed cool, even when the Indianapolis Colts sent blitzes after him with their linebackers. Foles still delivered near-perfect downfield throws that helped the Jaguars strike first after he completed six of his first seven attempts in the first quarter.

Appearing desperate, the Colts turned their play up a notch like all playoff teams do. And the Jaguars' sense of urgency that they spoke about all week eruptly vanished.

Suddenly, they could no longer tackle. Offensively, Foles slogged through drives, unable to led the Jaguars downfield.

At every corner of the Lucas Oil Stadium, the crowd roared.

Running back Milton Mack bolted up the middle, spun around twice to make cornerback Tre Herndon and linebacker Najee Goode on his way to a 13-yard touchdown to tie the score at 7. Adam Vinatieri made a 34-yard field goal midway in the second quarter that led to a 10-7 halftime lead.

Then, the Colts took over the game with two third-quarter touchdowns a 1-yard catch from Marcus Johnson and a 5-yard quarterback keeper from Jacoby Brissett that came after guard Quenton Nelson scored on a 1-yard dive play but the play was nullified after the replay review determined he didn't cross goal line.

Nonetheless, the damage had already been done. The Jaguars had too many drives that went no where. Too many dropped Foles passes and too many extended runs allowed by a Jaguars defense that couldn't match up to the physical play of the Colts offensive line or stop the run.

The Colts sacked the Jaguars with 31 unanswered points. Even Josh Lambo, who had made 24 consecutive field goals to tie his own record set in 2018, missed a 46-yard attempt earlier in the fourth quarter.
