Jaguars release safety Tashaun Gipson

After reportedly trying to trade him, the Jacksonville Jaguars have decided to release safety Tashaun Gipson. The news was first reported by Dan Graziano of ESPN and announced by the team.

Gipson, 28, signed with the Jags in 2016 via free agency after previously spending time with the Cleveland Browns. During his tenure with the Jags, he was able to accumulate a total of 159 tackles and six interceptions, while starting and playing a total of 48 games.

Releasing Gipson frees up $7.45 million in cap space for the Jags as it appears they’re shaving their roster to have funds to attack the 2019 free agency class. As of now, it appears Jarrod Wilson will replace him going forward after signing a three-year, $9 million deal (with $1.5 million guaranteed). Then again, the Jags have the cap to pursue a free agent replacement, too, if they’d like.

As for Gipson, his market should be a solid one despite the 2019 free-agent safety class being strong. The two biggest fits could be with either the Los Angeles Chargers, who have his former head coach Gus Bradley as their defensive coordinator, or the San Francisco 49ers, who have former Jags linebackers coach Robert Saleh as their defensive coordinator.
