Jaguars place Marcell Dareus on IR, sign Akeem Spence

With Marcell Dareus having core muscle surgery Thursday, the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to place the veteran on injured reserve Friday. They also signed veteran defensive tackle Akeem Spence in his place.

This news could mean Dareus has played his last down in Jacksonville with a high cap figure coming in 2020, though he could come back off IR during the last week of the season when the Jags play the Indianapolis Colts. He also could be a candidate to return if the Jags make the playoffs and want to take him into the postseason. However, if it is his last time suiting up, he’ll end his career with the Jags with 65 tackles (12 this season) and 2.5 sacks over the span of three years with the team.

Spence, 29, was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth-round (No. 100 overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft out of Illinois. After spending four years there, he spent time with the Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins and Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Jags. He’ll enter his tenure in Jacksonville with 179 total tackles, 10.5 sacks, a forced fumble and three fumble recoveries.
