Jaguars, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo mutually agree to part ways

After just one season, offensive coordinator John DeFilippo and the Jaguars mutually agreed to part ways, the franchise announced Monday.

Coach Doug Marrone plans to begin his search for a new offensive coordinator immediately.

Under DeFilippo, the Jaguars ranked 20th in total offense (341.8) and 26th in scoring (18.6). In red zone scoring percentage for touchdowns, the Jaguars ranked 31st (40.43).

The Jaguars scored only three rushing touchdowns in 16 games.

Still, DeFilippo's departure is somewhat of a surprise. It was defensive coordinator Todd Wash, who was on the hot seat during the final two months of the season.

However, Marrone had no other staff changes to announce Monday.

With a need to revitalize his offense, Marrone hired DeFilippo January 2019 to replace Nathaniel Hackett (fired Nov. 26).

Though DeFilippo lasted only 13 games with the Minnesota Vikings as their offensive coordinator in 2018, he was a successful quarterbacks coach with the Philadelphia Eagles from 2016-17.

DeFilippo developed Carson Wentz, the second overall pick in 2016, and then backup Nick Foles emerged under his direction after he replaced injured Wentz and led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title last year.

They were reunited in Jacksonville but Foles suffered a broken collarbone 11 plays into the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs. When Foles returned from the injury, he struggled and was eventually benched and replaced by rookie Gardner Minshew, who went 6-6 as a starter.

Now, Marrone will be seeking to hire his third offensive coordinator in three seasons.

Wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell could emerge as a possible candidate. Before Marrone hired DeFilippo last year, he interviewed Darrell Bevell and Todd Monken for the job.

DeFilippo is the third offensive assistant to part ways with the franchise since the season ended last month. Former assistant running backs coach John Donovan was hired as the University of Washington's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach last week.

Former quarterbacks coach Scott Milanovich left after the season ended to become the head coach of the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League.
