Jaguars hire Nick Sorensen as special teams coordinator

Former Jaguars safety Nick Sorensen officially became the newest member on Urban Meyer's coaching staff Tuesday, hired as special teams coordinator.

Sorensen, 42, is the fifth assistant Meyer has hired that previously worked as an assistant on Pete Carroll's staff with the Seattle Seahawks. He joins ex-Seahawks assistants offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal in Jacksonville.

Sorensen is replacing former Seahawks assistant Brian Schneider, who announced last month he was taking an indefinite leave of absence from the Jaguars due to personal reasons. Schneider also took a leave of absence last season with Seattle.

Sorensen had served as the Seahawks secondary coach/nickel cornerback specialist since 2017 after initially serving as special teams assistant for three seasons starting in 2013.

Sorensen played as a safety in the NFL for 10 seasons, including four with the Jaguars (2003-06). In Jacksonville, Sorensen served as the Jaguars' special teams captain.

He played for the St. Louis Rams in 2001-02 and was a member of their Super Bowl XXXVI team that lost to the New England Patriots.

Sorensen began his NFL career as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2001 before joining the Rams later that season. From 2007-10, he played for the Cleveland Browns and ended his career with 133 special teams tackles.

One of Sorensen's top highlights as an assistant in Seattle occurred during the 2019 season under his direction when cornerback Shaquill Griffin made his first career Pro Bowl. Griffin signed a three years, $44.5 million free agent contract in March to join the Jaguars.

OTA work resumes

The Jaguars' players returned to work on Tuesday for voluntary organized team activity workouts. They had been off since this past Thursday. The Jaguars are off again Wednesday before resuming work on Thursday and Friday. The Jaguars will wrap up OTA's next week with workouts scheduled for June 7-10. The team's mandatory minicamp is tentatively scheduled for June 15-17.
