JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jaguars owner Shad Khan called Urban Meyer's actions over the weekend inexcusable after two embarrassing videos surfaced.
But Meyer said he never considered resigning as the team's head coach.
Meyer's reply was quick — 'No' — when asked if he considered resigning during his Wednesday morning news conference.
Meyer also said he has not been levied a fine by Khan or the NFL.
''I had at least three or four conversations with Shad,'' Meyer said. ''The message is loud and clear, and I agree with. Also met with the team on Monday, individually, and then today. [I] had a very pointed conversation with them, owning a stupid mistake that I made."
Instead of meeting with the entire team on Monday to explain what happened, Meyer met individually with players in their position groups.
Meyer said he is not a big team meeting guy, saying you don't get much done.
"I wanted to get in their space. I have a good relationship with this whole team,'' Meyer said. ''I do a lot of it that way, where I'll go to you know the running backs, where there's a group of four. Team meetings are very ... it's just a big environment. In my opinion, you don't get much done in a team meeting. You get a lot done when you're in personal space with people. I've always done that."
For the third consecutive day, Meyer apologized for being a distraction after a second video surfaced Monday showing Meyer touching a woman's backside in a restaurant bar in Columbus, Ohio.
The video appears to be from the same event in Columbus, Ohio, where a video surfaced Saturday on Twitter that showed Meyer sitting in a chair while a woman who is not his wife was seen dancing up to him.
''A job of a coach is to, No. 1, health and safety of a player. No. 2 is motivate them or bring out the greatness in them. And No. 3 is give them everything possible to be successful and give them a great locker room and then get the heck out of the way. And I apologize for a distraction with a huge week coming up, especially after they made so much improvement from Week 1 to Week 4. That was the conversation."
In a statement released Tuesday, Khan said Meyer must regain their trust and respect that will require a personal commitment from him to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team.
''I am confident he will deliver,'' Khan said.
Meyer still drawing most of attention
However, the Jaguars have three more days to prepare for AFC South rival Tennessee Titans and Meyer remains distraction drawing nearly all of the attention in regards to the franchise.
Though he remains the coach, Meyer's future with the franchise appears to be uncertain, especially after Khan's statement that he must regain their trust and there's no certainty he can restore his credibility with his players.
The Jaguars are 0-4 under Meyer and they are just seven losses from tying the 1976-77 Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 26-game losing streak, the longest in modern NFL history.
Jacksonville has lost three consecutive games against the Titans and seven of their past eight dating back to 2017. The Titans (2-2), though, are coming off a 27-24 overtime loss to the New York Jets.
Meyer conferred with Baalke to not fly back with team
On not returning with the team from Cincinnati, Meyer said he discussed it with general manager Trent Baalke way in advance.
''I thought at the time this is a chance for everybody to clear their head,'' Meyer said. ''Myself with my family located where we were to go spend a day or two with them because I knew I wanted them to get out of dodge, too, to clear their heads.''
Meyer said he believes he can fix his marriage of 37 years with Shelley, calling it a 'speed bump' that is not going to get in the way of that.
"I believe so, and that's obviously, it's very personal,'' Meyer said. ''I don't want to get into our personal life, but 37 years we've been together and it's been awesome, man.''
At the end of his news conference, Meyer offered a public apology to the Jaguars fan base.
''Last and I would just like to say also to the 904 and Duval and our owner, you know like, why did I decide to come out of what I was doing and do this. Our owner, I just became, you know, (I) admire the guy so much,'' Meyer said.
''He's become a friend, he's a guy that I, like I said, I just admire. Jacksonville I know very well, I know our fans have been hanging in there with us, and I apologize to them and want to make that perfectly clear. Thank you.''
