Jaguars claim rookie Saints RB Devine Ozigbo off waivers

The New Orleans Saints lost a talented rookie to a rival team on Sunday. The Jacksonville Jaguars claimed running back Devine Ozigbo off of waivers after the Saints waived him on Saturday, giving the Nebraska product an opportunity to help back up starting running back Leonard Fournette.

Ozigbo first signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent, competing for the third spot in the Saints’ backfield behind Alvin Kamara and Latavius Murray. They opted to keep a valued special teamer instead in Dwayne Washington, running three-deep at the position for just the second time in nearly a decade. The Saints clearly have confidence in Kamara’s ability to handle a larger workload without getting worn down, as well as Murray’s upside in a new offense after playing for the Minnesota Vikings last year.

New Orleans likely hoped Ozigbo would escape notice on the waiver wire and make it back to their practice squad. He played well this summer, making plays both on the ground and through the air as a receiver. If he’d been able to crack the lineup on special teams, he just might have made the opening-day 53-man roster. Now, they might end up playing against him in their Oct. 13 game in Jacksonville.
