Jaguars chief of staff Fernando Lovo leaving for Texas, per report

Jacksonville will see its first midseason staff change as coach Urban Meyer’s chief of staff Fernando Lovo has taken a position at Texas, per NBC Sports’ Mike Florio. Lovo returns to Austin where he worked as the chief of staff from 2016-20 under former head coach Tom Herman.

Per his biography on the Jaguars website, Lovo “…will oversee various football support departments while also serving as Coach Meyer’s main liaison with the Front Office executive leadership team and Team President.”

Lovo also served under Herman at Houston, where he was assistant athletic director for football operations, before following him to Texas. He also followed Herman to Houston from Ohio State, where he had also worked under Meyer as a football operations coordinator.

He has a lengthy relationship with the coach, as Lovo, a graduate of the University of Florida, served under Meyer as a student at UF as a football operations assistant.

“Yeah, he came to me last week, and he wants to be an athletic director, and they offered him a really good job,” Meyer said after Sunday’s loss to San Francisco. “I knew that. Fernando’s like a son to me, so all positive.”

This is the first departure from Meyer’s staff since the season began, though the team did make a few minor changes to Meyer’s initial staff during the offseason.
