Jaguar Land Rover to suspend work at two UK plants due to parts shortage

Jaguar Land Rover is suspending work at two of its UK manufacturing plants because of a shortage of parts.

The company is blaming the coronavirus crisis for disrupting a supply of computer chips, which is affecting the manufacturing industry as a whole.

Production at Castle Bromwich in Birmingham and Halewood in Liverpool will be halted from next Monday, April 26.

The temporary shutdown is expected to last at least one week but JLR will continue to monitor supply issues.

It is unclear if employees at these plants will still be paid while work is halted.

The models affected by the temporary shutdown will be the Jaguar XE and XF executive cars and the F-Type sports car, as well as the Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque.

JLR's Solihull plant will continue working as normal.

The car manufacturing giant is not the only company to have experienced supply issues due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Renault has said its sales are being impacted by a shortage of computer chips, also known as semiconductors, and Honda said the dip in supply has led to production delays.

Honda similarly suspended production at its Swindon plant in January 2021 due to supplier delays.

It was the second time the plant has paused production in two months, with Brexit also affecting its ability to call in parts.

The latest update from JLR comes after it confirmed it will axe 2,000 jobs over the next 12 months, although it has yet to announce any redundancies.

JLR said in a statement said: "Like other automotive manufacturers, we are currently experiencing some COVID-19 supply chain disruption, including the global availability of semi-conductors.

"[This is] having an impact on our production schedules and our ability to meet global demand for some of our vehicles.

"As a result, we have adjusted production schedules for certain vehicles which means that our Castle Bromwich and Halewood manufacturing plants will be operating a limited period of non-production from Monday, April 26.”
