Jaguar Land Rover staff isolating after Covid-19 outbreak at Halewood plant

Staff at a Jaguar Land Rover plant are self-isolating after a small outbreak, the car manufacturing giant has said.

It's understood the outbreak has only affected a small number of employees at the Halewood plant in Merseyside, with operations continuing at the site.

A statement from a spokesperson for the plant said as well as more frequent deep cleaning of the Halewood site, where thousands are employed, it has instituted other safeguarding measures for its staff.

A statement on Wednesday said: “We can confirm that a small number employees based at our Halewood manufacturing facility have tested positive for Covid-19 and are self-isolating.

“Through contact tracing and working in conjunction with Public Health England, we have identified anyone who has been in close contact with those individuals at work and they are also self-isolating.

“The health of our workforce remains our primary concern and a deep clean of the area has been undertaken. We continue to follow all government and NHS advice.”

The other safeguarding measures include providing reusable masks and visors, hand sanitiser and regular temperature checks, as the Liverpool Echo reports.

The outbreak at Halewood comes as confirmed coronavirus cases continue to rise alarmingly across Merseyside, with Liverpool’s public health chief warning of a potential local lockdown as early as next week.

In Knowsley, where the Halewood plant is located, there were 65 new cases in the week up to Sunday (September 6) - almost a four-fold increase on the previous week - while Liverpool itself recorded 250 cases in the same period.
